Mesothelioma Cancer – Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and Legal Settlement
Every year around 2400 to 2800 people in US are diagnosed with Mesothelioma cancer – this is according to a report conducted by Centers Disease Control. The disease claimed around 30,000 lives in America between 1999 and 2010.
Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive type of cancer that is caused due to the inhalation of asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral found naturally and was massively used in industrial settings. Its properties are highly desirous, but the mineral is highly toxic. Today, the use of mineral is banned across 50 plus countries.
Mesothelioma cancer is commonly diagnosed in older people. The reason could be that it takes around 20 to 50 years for the symptoms of Mesothelioma to show after the first exposure to asbestos. By the time the cancer is diagnosed it has already reached the later stage. This is why the survival rates of Mesothelioma patients are quite low. The average life expectancy of Mesothelioma patients is 12 to 21 years. However, early detection of cancer and improved treatment methods have indeed given hope to the patients.
How asbestos causes Mesothelioma Cancer?
The cancer is commonly found in individuals who are doing blue color jobs. They get exposed to asbestos while working in factories, mills, and other industrial setups.
Following are the individuals who are at high risk of exposure to asbestos:
- Shipyard workers
- Demolition crews
The asbestos fibers then settle in different organs of the body and slowly spreads further to the point that it become fatal. Mesothelioma cancer is commonly diagnosed in three specific organs: Lungs, Abdomen, and Heart. Additionally, in rare cases, Mesothelioma also developed in the testicular regions. The cancer is formed in mesothelium, which is the lining of the lungs, abdominal and heart, or the spaces within the body. That’s why the name – Mesothelioma.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma
The symptoms differ as per the type of Mesothelioma cancer. Again, they can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years to appear. But, the common Mesothelioma symptoms include:
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- Nausea, vomiting
- Lungs or abdomen effusion
- Anemia (particularly in women)
